Praise for Heads: A Neurosurgeon’s Memoir and A Gentleman’s Guide to the Joint

From Daniel A. Thomas attorney and co-owner of Goldsmith-Thomas Studios (Perfect Stranger and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl) This memoir has captured a host of intriguing characters. The potential for this book and future exploitation of HEADS in film and/or television is great. The popularity of medical and legal dramas makes the time right for a hybrid project such as HEADS. This memoir is both unique and unusual, but completely engaging. Transforming one's life pain into a passion that can also sustain is both difficult and impressive, but you manage to do it quite well.

The mind-blowing part of this story is that it is based on the author’s actual experiences. There are descriptions of events that could only have been written by someone who was there, who has intimate knowledge of the nitty-gritty of the drug culture, the prison culture, the medical culture, and the weird and amazing fusion of all three. Think ‘Fear and loathing in Las Vegas’ with a neurosurgeon in the driver’s seat.

Thomas Cathcart Co-author of the New York Times best seller “Plato and a platypus walk into a bar: understanding philosophy through jokes”.

I heard many of the events in this book directly from the author’s mouth, and it’s a real pleasure to read about them as they happened. More pleasurable is the knowledge that my former student, my fellow physician and my boon dinner companion for many years since he left ‘camp’, can speak of his life with such candor. The humanistic characteristics and medical skills displayed by Dr. Lerner, along with his rough and ready personality, and his ultimate conversion to peace on earth, portrayed with ribald humor, much sensitivity, great insights by doncha, with touching pathos, was a pleasurable read. Laughing out loud, as the pages raced to the finish line, I experienced an amazing range of emotions that took me along on a perilous, but victorious journey.

I find the book extremely enticing. The best news is that there is no story here without “real” life and there is no real life without a story…this one is quite remarkable. I am intrigued by it, not as a professional, but as an ordinary person who vicariously seeks adventure, growth and insight. I just know that I will see this story on the red carpet some day soon!

HEADS IS COMPELLING AND VIVID. THIS IS AN ARRESTING MEMOIR THAT IS RICH WITH INSIGHT. DR. LERNER AND MS. FREEMAN HAVE DECIDED TO TELL ALL AND THE RESULT IS RIVETING. READERS WILL MARVEL AT THEIR INTELLIGENCE AND RESILIENCE. SIMPLY PUT, IT'S A GREAT READ.

Holistic and clean, doncha has woven many layers into this tapestry about Bernard and her life with him. Each time I read this multi-faceted story I discover new meaning in it.  These extraordinary people faced trauma and yet created – what some lives become - a work of art. A pithy and powerful read!

HEADS is a poignant and riveting look into the inner workings of one

of our most important professions, as well as the compelling tale of

the relationship of two very remarkable people.
